Conducting Effective & Adherent Individual DBT Sessions

Date: October 25 - 27, 2023

The focus of this 3-day workshop will be on providing effective, adherent DBT individual therapy. We will review principles and strategies that clinicians can use to provide adherent individual DBT sessions from the beginning to the end of treatment. We will begin with an overview of DBT theory and practice. We will also discuss and demonstrate ways to get started with DBT, including useful assessment and treatment strategies, what to do in the first four “pre-treatment” DBT sessions, and how to help clients commit to therapy. We will discuss how to effectively organize and provide individual therapy sessions, including using the diary card, applying the DBT targeting hierarchy, conducting effective chain analysis, and using various core intervention strategies (e.g., problem solving, contingency management, and other approaches). We will address tips for effectively navigating phone coaching in DBT, as well. In addition, we will examine acceptance-based techniques (e.g., validation) and DBT stylistic and dialectical strategies.
